ABSTRACT:

Novel FG-GPLRCs are multilayer functionally graded materials reinforced with graphene nanoplatelets (GPLs) that are non-uniformly distributed in matrix according to a layer-wise variation. Such nanocomposite materials offer unique advantages with significantly improved mechanical properties by making the best use of the extraordinary properties of graphene reinforcements and the beneficial attributes of functionally graded materials to simultaneously meet different structural performance requirements, making it ideal candidate for the development of new generation composite structures. Since first proposed in 2017, FG-GPLRC has become a fast growing emerging area of extensive research efforts worldwide. This talk presents the latest developments in this area, with a particular focus on (1) the fabrication of FG-GPLRC and its stress-strain relationship; (2) atomistic study on its temperature-dependent mechanical properties and pull-out test with the effects of vacancy defects and hydrogen functionalization; (3) linear and nonlinear dynamic behaviour of FG-GPLRC structures; (4) key technical issues and major challenges for future research on FG-GPLRC.

SHORT RESUME OF THE SPEAKER:

Dr. Yang is currently a full professor with the Mechanical and Automotive Engineering Discipline, School of Engineering, RMIT University, Australia. He was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Department of Civil Engineering, the University of Queensland from 2002-2004, a Lecturer at the Department of Building and Construction, City University of Hong Kong from 2004-2007. He joined RMIT in 2008 where he was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2010, Associate Professor in 2014 and Professor in 2016. His main research interests include advanced composite structures, nanocomposites, structural stability and dynamics, smart structures and control, and nano/micro-mechanics. He is an author of over 270 publications including 200 SCI journal papers, among which 12 are ESI (Essential Science Indicators) highly cited articles. His publications have so far attracted more than 8440 SCI citations with a personal SCI h-index 56.

Prof Yang is the Research Field Leader in Mechanical Engineering in Australia, the Associate Editor of  (1) Engineering Structures (JCR Q1), (2) Mechanics Based Design of Structures and Machines (JCR Q2); and the Editorial Board Member of (1) Mechanics of Advanced Materials and Structures (JCR Q1), (2) Thin-Walled Structures (JCR Q1), (3) International Journal of Structural Stability and Dynamics (JCR Q2), and (4) Shock and Vibration (JCR Q3). He is also the member of Structural Stability Committee, ASCE and serves as the reviewer for over 140 international journals and the assessor for government competitive research grants in Australia, Singapore, Israel, Poland and Hong Kong.
